What Is a DNA Base Pair?
Every living thing — you, your dog, a sunflower, a whale — runs on the same four-letter code. Here's what that actually means, with no biology degree required.
You are written in just four letters
DNA is the instruction book for building and running every living thing. Remarkably, that whole book is written with only four chemical letters— called bases. We give each one a color so they're easy to tell apart at a glance.
The letters hold hands in pairs
DNA is shaped like a twisted ladder — the famous double helix. Each rung of that ladder is two letters holding hands. That rung is a base pair.
And there's one rule that never changes:
- A always pairs with T
- G always pairs with C
So if you know one side of the ladder, you always know the other. Read enough of these rungs in order and you can spell out a gene.
Each rung = one base pair. The dashes are the tiny bonds holding the two letters together.
DNA has a busy little cousin: RNA
If DNA is the master cookbook kept safe on the shelf, RNA is the handwritten recipe card the kitchen actually cooks from. Your cells copy a short stretch of DNA into RNA, then use that working copy to build the proteins that run your body. Same four-letter idea — with a few key differences.

RNA · the messenger
- Usually a single strand
- Swaps T (thymine) for U (uracil) — so it reads A · U · G · C
- Short-lived — a working copy, made fresh and reused on demand
